NORTH REDINGTON BEACH, Fla. 鈥?Sand Key needs more sand. Its an ironic problem on the Pinellas County barrier i stanley cup sland thats home to coastal communities like Belleair Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Redington Beach, and Madeira Beach. For months, mayors along the island have underscored the need for more. Now, theyre intensifying that plea after Hurricane Idalia worsened beach erosion that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection already considers critical. This beach should extend from the top of [the hotels] seawall all the way out about 300 feet and then it slowly, gradually goes down, Queen explained.Because of the new topography, a high tide Thursday climbed within roughly ten feet from the hotels seawall and left just a sliver of beach for the tourists and visitors returning to enjoy the surf and sand. Youve got no sand, you know, youve got no beach, youve got no tourists, the mayor warned. The beach erosion also leaves the barrier island more vulnerable to future storms with less buffer between the Gulf of Mexico and homes, hotels, and businesses.
