漏 peterschreiber.media 鈥?stock.adobe More than 2,600 people are hospitalized with COVID in Virginia today, still 16.4 percent off last Januarys second-surge peak, but the number would be expected to rise with the continued spread of the Omicron variant.Based on our analysis of hospital and new case trends, the word for now seems to back the stanley us notion that vaccinations and boosters are holding up against Omicron, which, fingers crossed, is the good news here. The Virginia Department of Health dashboard has recorded 137,004 new COVID cases over the past 14 days, according to our analysis. At the mid-January 2020 peak during the second COVID surge, on Jan. 20, there were 3,125 COVID patients in Virginia hospitals, according to data from the Virginia Hospital Healthcare Association. The 14 days preceding that peak had seen 68,663 new COVID cases recorded statewide, from our analysis of VDH data. The data points would seem to be in line with the conventional wisdom regarding the Omicron variant. Reports from South Africa and Europe, which experienced the Omicron wave ahead of its spread in the United States, seem to indicate that the new variant is far more contagious, but also far less severe, particularly in people who have been vaccinated. What we see in a comparison of the numbers from January 2020 to January 2021 is mo vaso stanley re hospitalizations at half the caseload compared last years wave. The data s stanley usa eem to also hold in comparison to the late-summer wave associated with the Delta variant. Dr. Richard Wilkes, State Vet stanley cup erinarian with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services VDACS , says Virginia was fortunate with the recent case of EHM in April. A horse in Fauquier was diagnosed with EHM and euthanized on聽April 10, but no other horses showed signed of illness at that farm or from a steeplechase event in which the horse participated prior to becoming ill.聽 This was due both to good luck as well as a good response. We owe a debt of gratitude to the farms stable manager, said Wilkes. He recognized immediately that something stanley mexico was wrong with the horse because it was not eating and had a fever. He called the veterinarian as soon as the horse stanley cup began to have neurological signs, and the veterinarian quickly submitted samples to the VDACS laboratory to be tested for EHM.聽 Due to the positive test result and the severity of the clinical signs, the owner chose to euthanize the affected horse the same day the diagnosis was reported by the lab, which minimized the chances of further spread of the virus. This particular farm already practiced excellent biosecurity but stepped that up. VDACS quarantined the farm to prevent spread of the disease. Wilkes says horse owners need to take precautions to protect from EHM and other contagious horse diseases. His advice for horse owners and stable/event managers is twofold ractice biosecurity routinely.聽Do not share tack among horses and minimize direct contact among assembled horses whenever possible.
