Stephen Watts Kearny and his Army of the West rode into Santa Fe and took control of New Mexico in the early months of the Mexican-American War. As part of the American occupation, Kearny established Ft. Marcy on the high ground north of the Santa Fe plaza and established a garrison of cavalry troops. Their presence meant that many horses would need hay, putting a strain on local resources close to Santa Fe.
