In the spirit of Halloween, scientists are releasing a trio of stellar ghosts caught in infrared light by NASA s Spitzer Space Telescope. All three spooky structures, called planetary nebulas, are in fact material ejected from dying stars. As death beckoned, the starswispy bits and pieces were blown into outer space. Some might call the images haunti vaso stanley ng,said Joseph Hora of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, Mass., principal investigator of the Spitzer observing program. We look to the pictures for a sense of the history of the starsmass loss, and to learn how they evolved over time. All stars about the mass of our sun will die similarly ethereal deaths. As sun-like stars grow old, billions of years after their inception, they run out of fuel in their cores and puff up into red, giant stars, aptly namedred giants. The stars eventually cast off their outer layers, which expand away from the star. When ultra stanley mug violet light from the core of a dying star energizes the ejected layers, the billowy material glows, bringing their beautiful shapes to light. These objects in their final death throes, the planetary nebulas, were named erroneously after their resemblance to planets by William Herschel in 1785. They come in an array of shapes, as illustrated by the three highlighted here in infrare stanley website d images from Spitzer. The ghostly material will linger for only a few thousand years before ultimately fading into the dark night.Exposed Cranium NebulaThe brain- Hclt World s First Baby Born With DNA From Three Parents

While he of course did not have amphetamines in mind, he would no doubt have been impressed by their powerful war-facilitating psychoactive effects. Amphetaminesmdash;often called pep pills, go pills, uppers or ldquo peedmdash;are a group of synthetic drugs that stimulate the central nervous system, reducing fatigue and appetite and increasing wakefulness and a sense of well-being. The quintessential drug of the modern industrial age, amphetamines arrived relatively late in the history of mind-altering substancesmdash;commercialized just in time for mass consumption during World War II by the leading industrial powers. That war was not only the most destructive war in human history but also the most pharmacologically enhanced. It was literally sped up by speed.Few drugs have received a bigger stimulus from war. As Lester Grinspoon and Peter Hedblom wrote in their classic 1975 study The Speed Culture, World War II probably gave th stanley romania e greatest impetus to date to legal medically authorized as well as illicit black market abuse of these pills on a worldwide scale.Japanese, American and British forces consumed large amounts of amphet stanley cup becher amines, but the Germans were the most enthusiastic e stanley cups arly adopters, pioneering pill-popping on the battlefield dur
